Venezuelan President and re-election candidate Nicolás Maduro concluded his campaign in the capital city of Caracas after a large mobilization covering 10 main streets. In his campaign closing, he called for unity among different segments of the population and emphasized the creation of a new majority to heal the wounds caused by sanctions and blockades imposed on the country.
"We must form a solid block to unite Venezuela, because the issue here is unity. Unite all Venezuelan men and women for peace, independence, stability, true democracy, love, harmony, and participation. The main task now is to come with us to build a homeland, a national unity," said the president in front of the crowd gathered at the historic Bolivar Boulevard.
Maduro announced that if he wins, he will call for a "great national dialogue" in the political, social, economic, and cultural fields on Monday, July 29. He emphasized that this dialogue would not be an agreement among "elites" but rather an agreement aimed at developing democracy and the Constitution with "ordinary people and all political sectors that respect democracy." He also confirmed that the worst part of the crisis is behind and that the country is in the process of economic recovery.
"In Venezuela today, we are standing. We defeated the sanctions and the blockade, and our goal is great; for growth, economic prosperity, but for this, we need peace and stability," he said.
During his intense campaign period, Maduro visited over 300 towns and cities in 23 states. His aim was to search for the "truth" expressed in the resilience capacity shown by citizens during the crisis years caused by U.S. economic restrictions.
"In the words of our father and teacher Hugo Chavez, it was an admirable, heroic, creative, joyful, festive, purposeful campaign; a campaign where we united all the people's forces," he remarked.
Maduro also dedicated a significant part of his speech to the legacy of former President Hugo Chavez. "I want to bring this spirit here because everything I am, everything I will be, everything we did, we did it with his example, his legacy, his presence. Everything happened thanks to you, eternal commander Hugo Chavez," he said.
The Venezuelan president reiterated that the future of the country is at stake in the elections, and the people will have to choose between "extreme right" and "chavismo," "fascism" and "people's democracy," "wild capitalism" and "Christian socialism," "homeland" and "colony," while also rescuing the country from the insults of the extreme right that calls for and supports the imposition of sanctions.
"As a leftist, socialist, Christian, Bolivarian, and increasingly Chavez-like man, today, on July 25, from Greater Caracas and all of Venezuela, I ask for your support, your love, and your vote to win the next elections on July 28 and open the doors to permanent peace, stability, and greatness," he said.
Maduro also warned about a possible lack of information regarding the results, a view matrix developed by sectors linked to the candidate of the Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia.
"They are already claiming fraud. We will not allow them to continue causing harm. If they violate the laws, it will be the last mistake they make in their lives. There will be an iron fist and justice in political life. To fascists, violence, and guarimberas: We will not allow hatred, revenge, or guarimba (violent protests in a rebellious tone) in Venezuela, and I guarantee that justice will prevail," he warned.
