Verdi's 'Attila' to open 5th İstanbul Opera Festival
"Attila," Giuseppe Verdi's opera in three acts that recounts the story of the Hun emperor, will be opening this year's İstanbul International Opera Festival next week when the Ankara State Opera and Ballet takes its production of the 1846 opera to the Zorlu Performing Arts Center (PSM) stage on Tuesday night.

The festival, organized annually by the Ankara-based State Opera and Ballet Directorate General (DOBGM), will be marking its fifth year on June 3-17 with six productions to be presented in 10 performances overall in four different venues across the city.

Four of Turkey's state opera companies -- İstanbul, Ankara, Samsun and Mersin -- as well as Austrian company Salzburger Landestheater will present their productions at the festival, whose artistic director is Yekta Kara.

The festival's second performance at Zorlu PSM is scheduled for June 6, when the İstanbul State Opera and Ballet will stage Rossini's "Maometto secondo," an opera that tells the story of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II.

The Samsun State Opera and Ballet will present Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio" twice, on June 9 and June 10, in the garden of the İstanbul Archaeological Museums, and will also stage Kazakh composer Mukan Tölebayev's "Birjan and Sara" on June 13 at Bakırköy Municipality's Leyla Gencer Theater.

The Salzburger Landestheater will be at the Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy to present its production of Haydn's three-act opera "The Unexpected Encounter" in two performances, on June 14 and 15.

The Mersin State Opera and Ballet will perform the Turkish operetta "Lüküs Hayat" (High Life), by the renowned composer Cemal Reşit Rey, on June 15 and 16, at the Leyla Gencer Theater in Bakırköy.

The festival each year features a gala concert and this year's event will host the Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Grammy-winning soprano Ana María Martínez as soloists with the İstanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra under the baton of American conductor Constantine Orbelian.

The concert, set for June 17 at Zorlu PSM, promises a stylish sendoff to this year's festival, thanks to its packed program of arias from world-famous operas by Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Rossini, Dvorak and Bizet.

Opera lovers in Turkey can also start planning their itineraries for late summer as tickets for the 21st edition of Antalya's annual Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival, set for Aug. 30-Sept. 24, have been available for purchase since Monday. Among the highlights of the program are "La Traviata," from the Antalya State Opera and Ballet, and the İzmir State Opera and Ballet's "Aida."
