Thai singer arrested with cocaine in İstanbul
An İstanbul court issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for a Thai singer detained by police as part of an anti-smuggling operation.

The İstanbul Police Department's Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Unit on Monday launched an anti-smuggling operation, the result of a three-month investigation, at İstanbul Atatürk Airport, after receiving tips that a person would be smuggling cocaine from South Africa. A 48-year-old Thai singer, Kornrawee Aeamsiri, was found with over two kilograms of cocaine hidden among candies in her luggage. Police detained the woman.

During police questioning, Aeamsiri said her South African lover had bought the plane ticket to allow her to visit her children in Thailand, and had given her the bag containing candies to offer to her children. She added that she did not know there was cocaine in the bag.

Turkish law enforcement agencies are strongly committed to uncovering and preventing illegal drug trafficking. The Turkish National Police remain Turkey's most proactive counternarcotics force, with the gendarmerie and customs office continuing to play significant roles.
