MHP Holds Ordinary Congress in Ankara
Turkey's opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) is holding its 10th ordinary congress in the nation's capital of Ankara on Sunday.

A total of 1,241 delegates will cast votes to elect the new leader of the MHP.

The number of candidates running to be chairperson of the MHP -- a party which generally does not witness an intense leadership race as the next chairperson of the party is typically well-known before a congress is even held -- is 10, including current party leader Devlet Bahçeli.

The increase in the number of candidates is attributed to a call from Bahçeli saying that anyone in the congress who wanted to run could do so. According to the MHP's lobby, emphasizing intra-party democracy, Bahçeli had called for interested party members to run for the post of chairperson.

Under the MHP's bylaws, the support of at least 40 delegates is needed for a nomination. (Cihan/Todays Zaman)
