BRUSSELS

The envoys of 28 NATO countries have gathered in a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday at request of Turkey.

Turkey will brief the North Atlantic Council on the downing of its unarmed RF-4 military jet by Syria last Friday.
The Brussels meeting will be chaired by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the participants will hold consultations on the response to be made against Syria after it downed the Turkish military jet.
Turkey called on its NATO allies to conduct a meeting under Article 4 which facilitates consultations when the territorial integrity, political independence or security of a member state comes under a threat.
Turkey reserves the right to act under Article 5 of NATO if there is a need.
Following the meeting on Tuesday, Rasmussen is expected to make a statement condemning Syria, warning Syria about its responsibilities and supporting Turkey.
